Culture & Language

The rich and vibrant Wichita culture and language are an integral part of our  identity. By taking the time to learn about our traditions, language and history, we can gain a deeper appreciation for ourselves, but also keep our traditions alive. In order for our people to thrive, culture and language must be accessible and it must be shared in more ways. We have relatives who live outside the community of Anadarko who should also be given more opportunities to engage in the culture.

Throughout the world, there are approximately 7,000 languages in use today.  Of those languages, an estimated 50-90% will be extinct by the end of this century. In Oklahoma, there were once 37 indigenous languages spoken. Of those languages, 22 have become extinct (Baines, 2012).
